Postal Perps: Why Your Dog Might Be Right About Hating the Mailman!

If your pup is on constant watch to keep the pesky mail man away-they may be onto more than just guarding the house! These five mail people are part of the reason why your dog is justified in their hatred and fear of United States Postal Service employees.

Looking forward to that birthday card with a crisp $50 from Grandma? Well, if Tammy Frink is your postman, you might not receive it. Frink was found guilty of opening a sealed mail item which she did not have permission to open. She was later found to have opened several other pieces of mail, where she also stole items and money from the items she was supposed to deliver. Frink was sentenced to 24 months of probation, 60 hours of community service, and forced to pay $1,686 of restitution to the victims she stole from. Your dog knows you were going to spend that birthday money on him, so why shouldn’t he hate the mailman?

If you thought missing $50 out of Grandma’s birthday card was bad, imagine the firearm you were expecting to receive going missing! Demarkis Houston worked at a package distribution plant when he unlawfully opened a package that happened to contain a 9mm pistol. It was discovered when Houston was pulled over for a license plate infraction, and the weapon was found when police searched his car. Moral of the story is: if your postman has outdated tabs on their vehicle, call the cops. And maybe don’t let your dog go after this guy.

Just when you thought postal employees couldn’t steal anything except mail, along comes Johnnie Franklin Sullivan to prove you wrong. Sullivan was convicted of workers compensation fraud, and since 2005 had claimed that a job-related injury had drastically impaired his physical abilities. However, photos of his trips across Europe and the U.S. showed him hiking, boogie boarding, dancing, and even ziplining, all things he claimed not to be able to do with his injury. In the 19 years that he had received workers compensation, Sullivan had received over $100,000 which funded his recreational activities. As of now his sentencing date has not been set. Thankfully, he is healthy enough to run when your dog chases him down.

‘How many more mail crimes can there be?’, you ask. Although I do not know the answer to that question, Michael Burdette provides us with yet another reason why your dog is right to hate the mailman. Burdette, a rural postal worker in West Virginia, discarded over 200 items of mail meant to be delivered in the dumpster of a local business. He did this not just once, but twice. Why did he do it? He was running late for a personal matter. Unless he was trying to get home early to see his dog, this guy deserves to be chased by some pups.

Finally, we have not just a postman committing a crime, but a postmaster. Ephrem Nguyen, a postmaster in Massachusett, managed to defraud the postal service of over $850,000. Nguyen had a variety of methods to embezzle and defraud, including overpaying vendors who bribed him, using USPS services for himself, his children and his personal business, as well as fraudulent travel expense reimbursements. Nyugen is currently out on a $100.000 bond, but faces up to 20 years in prison. At least there won’t be any dogs to run him down there!

Hopefully you now understand why your dog might be so hateful towards your mail carrier-after all, they might be guilty of some pretty serious crimes! What goes around comes around, and for your local postman justice might be served by your very own pup. So next time the mailman comes around, maybe let your dog give him a few extra barks and growls before you bring him inside.
